Representing Injured Workers Since 1955

Man crushed to death by falling concrete slab

Employees in any industry can suffer from work-related illnesses or sustain injuries due to accidents that happen on the job. Some workers, however, experience far higher risks of such things than others. Californians who work in the construction or industrial sectors, for example, are naturally exposed to more dangers on a daily basis than people who work in other sectors. A single workplace injury can happen in the blink of an eye and be caused by an unsafe working environment or other safety hazard.

The Occupational Safety Health Administration is commonly involved in any investigation regarding an accident on the job, especially if employer negligence may be suspected. A recent fatal accident in Sioux City has been added to OHSA’s investigation list after a 59-year old man was crushed to death by a large block of concrete weighing 3,200 pounds. Being crushed by or pinned between objects is a common type of accident in industrial and construction businesses.

The man was an employee of the concrete company where the accident took place. The company had most recently been inspected by OSHA six years ago. That inspection revealed six different violations which the company promised to correct. It is yet unknown if there were any violations or unobserved safety standards which contributed to the latest death. The concrete slab slipped from its suspended state and landed on the victim.

In cases where employees lose their lives while on duty, family members are left searching for justice. Talking to an attorney can be one way to learn what options exist to receive some compensation in exchange for the loss of loved ones.
