Deadly work accident under investigation by Cal-OSHA

California construction workers know that theirs is an industry laden with dangers. An on-the-job accident can result in serious injuries or even death all too quickly. A ladder fall, a scaffolding fall, the negligent operating of machinery and more are all common causes of workplace accidents on construction sites. When a work accident turns fatal, the importance of a thorough investigation cannot be ignored.

A new investigation by California Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been launched into a recent incident at a construction site in the Bay area that claimed the lives of two workers. The 25-year old and 49-year old men were the victims of fatal falls that took them from a crane suspended 80 feet in the air onto wood beams below. Details of the cause are unclear at this time although the owner of the construction company indicates that the crane did not break.

The accident occurred at the beginning of the workday on a site constructing a new bridge to replace a former 102-year old bridge. The construction company had erected a temporary bridge and the footings for the new bridge were in process at the time of the accident. Cal-OSHA is expected to complete and release a report on the incident no later than October 30. It is expected that the report will identify any employer negligence or unsafe working environment that may have contributed to the men’s deaths.

An accident on the job can be difficult for injured employees, family members and coworkers. Employers are responsible for offering safe working conditions. When problems occur, compensation or other recourse may be needed and talking to a lawyer may be one route to receiving that.
