Representing Injured Workers Since 1955

California workers" compensation rates to get a boost

Workers' compensation laws and regulations in the state of California are constantly changing, which means anyone who has been hurt on the job in the Los Angeles area needs to be aware of his or her rights and how to go about ensuring that he or she will receive a fair amount of compensation after being injured.

There is good news for employees in California as the state’s insurance commissioner has voted to back a plan to increase workers’ compensation rates by 6.7%. However, not everyone is greeting the news with open arms. Several small business owners are concerned about being able to stay profitable with the increase. At a time when the state’s minimum wage is also increasing, some business owners are worried that the increased workers’ comp rate will be the difference between profit and loss.

However, California insurance commissioner Dave Jones says the increase of 6.7% is in line for policies that take effect after January 1. Meantime, David DePaolo, chief executive of the website workcompcentral.com, said that the rate increases should be modest. "I don't think there's a whole lot of panic right now,” said DePaolo.

Although business owners and employers may not be excited about paying higher workers’ compensation rates, it is important that workers across the state of California are covered if they are hurt on the job. Anyone who has been hurt and is finding it difficult to receive the proper compensation might want to seek the help of an experienced workers’ compensation attorney.
