Representing Injured Workers Since 1955

Workplace injuries trend down but injury duration increases

Businesses and employers take several steps to make their workplaces safe. However, workplace accidents still happen on various job sites every day and employees are often injured as a result. Anyone who is hurt on the job in Los Angeles is entitled to workers’ compensation for his or her lost wages.

According to a new report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) the frequency of nonfatal work injuries and illnesses has gone down in the U.S., but the severity of those occupational injuries has gone up. According to the BLS report, the number of cases of work-related injuries or illnesses that required missed work time dropped from 117 cases per 10,000 workers to 112 cases per 10,000 workers from 2011 to 2012. However, the median number of days missed increased to nine in 2012 from eight in 2011.

The amount of time a worker has been on the job also appears to play a role in the number of work-related accidents and injuries. Workers with a shorter length of time on the job represented 30 percent of all private sector job-related injuries. According to the BLS report, workers who have been on the job for less than three months also experienced an eight percent injury increase in 2012.

Accidents happen at work every day and when workers are forced to miss time and lose wages because of those accidents they should receive fair compensation for their time missed. Anyone who has been hurt on the job and is not receiving a fair amount of workers' compensation should probably speak with a workers’ comp lawyer as soon as possible.
