Representing Injured Workers Since 1955

Jury awards injured man millions for debilitating work accident

When a person is hurt in a workplace accident many different things can happen. Although businesses and insurance companies are supposed to follow the laws and procedures put in place to protect injured workers that doesn’t always happen. However, if a person has been hurt at work in the Van Nuys area he or she should be entitled to fair compensation.

A jury has awarded a 28-year-old man more than $10 million dollars after he suffered serious back injuries in a workplace accident at a recycling plant. The accident happened when the man was pinned between a pallet and a shredder machine when a forklift operator didn’t see the man while rounding a corner. According to court papers, the forklift driver had recently been hired and was not yet properly trained to operate the lift truck.

The injured man had to have two surgeries and is expected to have to undergo more procedures in the future. The jury awarded him a total of $10.1 million, with $2 million for past and future medical expenses and almost $4 million for loss of past and future income. He also received more than $3.2 million for past and future pain and suffering, and more than $848,000 for loss of past and future household services.

In this case the jury felt that this man’s injuries could have been prevented and that because of that he should now be compensated for his pain and suffering. No one should ever be hurt at work, especially because of negligence. Any person in the Los Angeles area who has been hurt on the job might want to speak with a workers' compensation lawyer as soon as he or she can.
