Representing Injured Workers Since 1955

California hospitals still lacking safe practices for nurses

There are a lot of ways for people to get injured on the job in Los Angeles. Some professions are more prone to injuries than others. However, it doesn’t matter what kind of profession a person works in, he or she should be kept safe and secure from harm.

According to a new report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nursing aides, orderlies and attendants are the victims of more musculoskeletal injuries than people in any other profession. Meantime, registered nurses are also the victims of more of these types of injuries than the average worker. Despite the efforts of the American Nurses Association to get laws passed to make nationwide standards to protect nurses mandatory, nothing has been done.

Meantime, the state of California passed a safe-patient handling bill in 2011, but nurses from the state have testified that those safe practices have yet to be established in California hospitals. Under the bill, nurses say they expected hospitals to provide them with more equipment to help assist them with lifting patients. However, they say that hospitals have yet to do so.

Although accidents and injuries can happen at the workplace, they shouldn’t be because of negligence or because workers aren’t provided with the proper equipment to safely do their jobs. If a company or business doesn’t provide the right tools and equipment to make a workplace safe, it could be held accountable for any injuries that occur. If someone in Los Angeles has been hurt on the job he or she is most likely eligible for workers' compensation. He or she might want to speak with a workers’ comp attorney right away.
