Representing Injured Workers Since 1955

California ranks third highest in nation for workplace injuries

Injuries of many sorts are common reasons for missed days at work by California employees in all sectors. When an injury results from an incident or environment at work, however, the situation can become more complex. A workers’ compensation claim is required and can help to provide financial support to the injured employee if they are unable to work due to the injury. For injuries lasting longer than one year, a Social Security Disability Insurance claim may also be filed.

A recent report conducted by Allsup showed California as having the third highest rate of workplace injuries in the nation. According to information from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), one out of every 100 workers in the state are hurt on the job each year. That compares to the national average of 0.7. The study focused on injuries that resulted in time off of work or some restrictions on work performance. The report collected data from 41 states.

Many of the industries identified with the largest number of workplace injury are common throughout California, including amusement parks, foundries, animal slaughtering and processing, some animal farming, nursing homes and beverage manufacturing. More than one million employees nationwide miss at least one day of work annually for injuries sustained at work.

A workplace illness or injury can leave employees with long-term effects, medical expenses and more. Employees injured while at work may wish to consider obtaining legal advice to learn how they can be properly compensated and cared for.
