Representing Injured Workers Since 1955

Safe workplace called for by staff at mental health care facility

Care facility employees have a responsibility to provide proper treatment of patients at all times. They also have the right to know they are safe from injury and will be taken care of in the event that a workplace accident or injury does occur. When dealing with people that have special needs, this can be a delicate subject.

A group of workers at a mental health recovery facility in Long Beach are going on strike, alleging that their employer, La Casa Mental Health Rehabilitation Center, did not provide adequate protection for their safety against several patients at the recovery center. Some employees state they have been the victim of injuries that have resulted in medial expenses and lost wages. The striking employees state that no workers' compensation has been offered to them.

The workers’ injuries include shoulder strain, cervical strain, back injury, head contusion, chest wall strain and more. More than 200 incidents ranging from assault to rape were reported to police. Staff members are calling for increased safety measures for employee as well as patient safety. They report assualt from patient to staff, patient to patient and patient to visitor as well.

As at any type of business, employees of care facilities from mental health centers to nursing homes deserve the ability to work in a safe environment and know that their employers will provide appropriate protection. If  you are injured at your workplace and do not receive the support you feel you deserve from your employer, talking to an attorney may be a good idea.
