Representing Injured Workers Since 1955

Construction site falls highlighted in new OHSA regulations

Falls are a primary source of injury accidents on both commercial and residential construction sites. Workers’ compensation claims often result from such accidents to help protect the injured workers and their families. A scaffolding fall or ladder fall can be serious, if not fatal. An injured construction worker may incur medical expenses as well as be unable to work, causing loss of income after an on-the-job accident.

Safety on construction sites has long been an important focus for the Department of Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA). However, there had been different regulations governing safe practices while working at heights between commercial and residential construction sites until recently. In March 2013, OSHA passed new guidelines that require residential sites to follow the same safety measures for workers performing duties at heights above six feet.

A recent construction accident at Virginia Tech highlights the importance of such vigilance. After a roughly 25 foot fall of a hydraulic scaffold, five workers were left injured. A movement led by a professor at Virginia Tech is currently underway to increase safe work practices and to cultivate an environment in which safety is the priority for all workers.

If you are a construction worker that has been injured in a construction site accident or that simply wants to learn more about the laws available to protect you in the event of an accident, a consultation with a workers’ compensation attorney can help.  You can learn about job safety, workers’ compensation and other topics to help protect you and your family.
