Salvation Army worker suffers serious arm injuries in Pasadena

A recent machinery accident in Pasadena has left a man with serious arm injuries. He was working at a Salvation Army warehouse when his arm became ensnared in a conveyor belt used to sort through clothing.

According to a news report, 11 paramedics and firefighters showed up at the facility on Waverly Drive, and the rescue, which was described by a fire department spokesperson as "very rare," took about an hour and a half. The injured worker was said to be in his 30s.

Rescuers had to dismantle the conveyer belt to free the worker's arm, and he was given pain medication while the rescuers worked. The exact cause of the accident was under investigation by California safety officials.

Machinery accidents are some of the most common and most serious workplace accidents. Not only are the injuries themselves traumatizing; injured workers sometimes suffer surgical errors and develop painkiller addiction in the wake of a workplace injury.

In California, employees who suffer work-related injuries or illness are entitled to workers' compensation benefits, no matter the circumstances of the accident.

Still, insurance companies and employers are notorious for denying or resisting workers' compensation claims, and employees have to take legal steps to get the coverage they need.

In this particular case, the investigation should determine whether or not the injured worker was properly trained to operate the conveyor belt and whether the machine had received proper and timely maintenance. Even though the accident was described as rare, the employee should be aware of his right to workers' compensation.
